The New New Leopard

Michael Bastian doesn’t have time for a vacation anytime soon. At yesterday’s launch for the unisex flip-flops he designed in collaboration with Havaianas—and used for his Spring ‘11 show—the designer (and CFDA award nominee) admitted with a sigh he won’t make it to the beach this summer. Shame for him, good for us: His schedule’s busier than usual as he prepares to get his Gant collection and his namesake collection ready for New York fashion week this September. (The Bastian collection wasn’t shown on the runway last season.) New York’s menswear designers have been decamping for Europe more and more lately—Yigal Azrouël and Phillip Lim are the latest two—owing to skewed production and sales schedules; men’s collections are typically done and sold by the time New York fashion week rolls around. But don’t look for Bastian to head east any time soon. It’s New York to the bitter end, he told Style.com. The flip-flops he designed come in four versions: two printed with Day-Glo bright divers, and two with a new take on leopard. (They’re all available now on Havaianas.com.) In general, Bastian said, “I’m not a leopard guy,” but his camouflage twist on the style—his favorite among the four—hits the butch-with-a-twist note he plays so successfully with his collections. (The leopard camo appeared this Spring as a print on shorts and pants, too.) And at $38, he joked, the flip-flops are the most affordable items he’s ever attached his name to. Not only that, they’re multipurpose. “Great for swatting flies,” he added with a laugh.

“The Young Victoria” World Premiere

Another rain soaked London evening almost ruined some of the wonderful gowns at The Young Victoria World Premiere last night.

Star of the movie Emily Blunt, looked radiant as she walked the red carpet, wearing a Vivienne Westwood strapless bustier floral print gown.

I am glad she didn’t wear a necklace, as the earrings were enough bling.

Emily was joined an elite guest list including the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, who is the producer of the movie.

She wore a rich deep purple taffeta Vivienne Westwood bustier dress, with black pumps.

I love how her dress gives her a nice lift.

British Designers seemed to be the theme of the night, as Princess Beatrice wore a sapphire toga-style Temperley London Glade dress.

The dress features, beaded appliqué detail on one-shoulder neckline, a draped detail which goes over the shoulder, and a bubbled hem.

This dress has a lot going on, but Princess Beatrice make it work.

Princess Eugenie wore an ivory Temperley London Rah satin dress. The sleeveless dress had a crochet lace panel yoke, which was a very pretty detail, whilst is also showed off a touch of cleavage.

She completed her look with Jimmy Choo Prairie sandals.

Miranda Richardson’s orange Temperley London Long Zora gown was soaked by the rain, but that did not stop her braving the cold and putting on a great smile.

The beaded halter is quite exquisite.

Runway To “Letter” London Premiere – Thandie Newton In Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Thandie Newton like so many of my girl crushes, never has a day off looking fabulous.

I wish everyone would give us this much perfection every time they hit the red carpet.

When Thandie attended “Solange Azagury-Partridge’s Stoned Jewellery Collection” which was followed by the premiere of “The Letter” at Home House in London, she looked outstanding wearing a Vivienne Westwood Red Label Spring 2010 strapless dress.

Thanks to Leona Lewis we have been pretty maxed out on Vivienne Westwood, but nothing could bore us about Thandie.

Her lilac taffeta Vivienne Westwood Red Label dress was breath-taking, as she paired it with a stunning necklace from Solange Azagury-Partridge’s amazing collection.

BDOTW contender.

Philippe Opens Out East

Memorial Day, it’s generally agreed, is the starter gun of summer. But the folks behind Philippe are sneaking ahead of the Hamptons pack, debuting their newest outpost, Philippe East Hampton, tonight. “It’s already pretty busy out here,” notes Philippe co-owner Stratis Morfogen. “We figure the real rush will start on Friday, though, when people come out before Memorial Day to prepare their houses.” Located at the old Kobe Club address, the fourth Philippe iteration has been a few years in the works, though Morfogen explains that plans laid in the boom era ought to pan out just fine in the bust. “We’ve already got parties booked,” he says, “and anyway, all those people who have been trying to sell their houses and their boats, to no avail, now they want to get as much enjoyment as possible out of what they’re stuck with. So they’re going to be out here all the time.” Morfogen and his partner, chef Philippe Chow, are anticipating plenty of at-home entertaining—they’re offering catering on the East End, and for the right occasion, Chow himself will come over and cook his nouvelle Chinese cuisine. To those who want to make a night out of it, however, Morfogen offers assurances that he and his team have translated the complete Philippe experience to the seaside: Per usual, the sleek-looking space has been designed by Morfogen’s wife, Vogue editor Filipa Fino, and the complete list of signature Philippe cocktails will be available. Indeed, at this evening’s gala opening, hosted by Hamptons magazine, the cocktails will be part of the open bar. “Our RSVP list is bursting,” Morfogen notes. Drink up.

“Live with Regis & Kelly” – Jennifer Lopez In Lanvin

Still on her promotional trail for “The Backup Plan”, Jennifer Lopez was spotted leaving her New York City hotel on her way to film “Live with Regis & Kelly”.

The actress looked very glam for an early morning show, as she sparkled wearing a beige sequin asymmetrical Lanvin dress which was covered with gold sequin.

I love the cute black bow at waist.

Jennifer accessorized with Lanvin Spring 2010 eggshell patent chain t-strap pumps.

You may remember that Jennifer wore these same shoes recently in Miami.

Lopez Love Lanvin.

The movie hits theaters this Friday. I hope it doesn’t suck.

Vera’s Academy Awards Wish

Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron to wear Givenchy Spring 2010 Couture

For Vera’s first wish she’s requested something different.

“Usually in this section readers choose clothes for a person – but I think this dress is that kind of dress (an outstanding one) needs a choice of beautiful ladies to wear it.”

“I have four in my list – all very classically beautiful, rather tall, statuesque and A-list stars – Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron”.

“All of them have already worn Givenchy – despite Gwyneth, she had only shoes – and were outstanding wearing the brand. Why not try this dress?”

” I any cases they all look much much better than Ciara (sorry, Mr Tisci!)”.

All great choices. I even liked Gwynie and Naomi, because even though they are the least obvious, they would still pull of this stunning dress.

Penelope Cruz to wear Chanel Fall 2009 Couture

“I absolutely love Penelope (in Pedro Almadovar’ movies) and she is undoubtedly a very beautiful woman. We all know the list of her favourite designers includes Giorgio Armani, Chanel, L’Wren Scott, sometimes – Alaia and Versace”.

“I hope she has had enough of wearing Armani clothes this year – I just don’t get them. I can’t get them – I’m only twenty! The same applies to L’Wren Scott.”

“We’ve seen her wear Versace to the Oscars before – isn’t it a time for Chanel?.. I remember Pe in Chanel two years ago… Sure, in this Couture Fall 2009 dress worn on the runway by Sasha Pivovarova she will be the best dressed. Fingers crossed.”

Zoe Saldana to wear Alexander McQueen Spring 2010

“To my mind, it is ridiculous that Zoe hasn’t yet worn any piece from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 collection – the collection made especially for her.”

“Well I know cocktail dresses are not “allowed” on Oscars night, but why not something modified?”

“I have seen close-ups of these dresses in Italian VOGUE and Russian L’Officiel and just fell in love with them. They are so delicate! I can’t imagine a better choice for Zoe for this Oscars. A gown based on one of these pieces will be unforgettable, no doubt.”

Carey Mulligan to wear Elie Saab Spring 2010, Aquilano.Rimondi Spring 2010 and Christopher Kane Spring 2010

“I haven’t yet seen Carey in ‘An Education’ as it will be released in Russian theaters after Oscars, so I can only speak about Carey as a red-carpet chick. And you know what? That chick has her own chic, which is a truly rare thing.”

“Of course, I know Carey’s obsession with Prada – a good obsession! – but I want her to try different designers. Real style – is a mix of different designer am not I right?”

“In my point of view, Carey is obliged to wearing colour. You remember how gorgeous Maggie Gyllenhaal was in a printed Lanvin gown last Golden Globes? I do. And I am sure, Carey will be amazing in a lengthen Elie Saab. Same about Aquilano.Rimondi – embellished bustier will be very good also. Christopher Kane is a designer to watch for Carey – this dress in a full length and modified bodice will make her glow. In her own way.”

Anna Kendrick to wear Gianfranco Ferre Spring 2010, Valentino Spring 2010 and J.Mendel Spring 2010

“Anna’s Golden Globes Marchesa dress was too heavy for her. I mean, the silk of the dress was too heavy – Anna is so thin, so light girl, she needs only light gown.”

“Light, sheer silk clothes. In soft, bright colours. She needs something delicate.”

“For the Oscars Gianfranco Ferre and Valentino only need to be modified with their length.”

Kate Hudson to wear Chapurin Fall 2009 Couture, Lanvin Spring 2010 and Valentino Fall 2009 Couture

“Kate Hudson is a beautiful, young, easy-going person. Why doesn’t she play with fashion?”

“I would love to see Kate wearing this dress from Russian designer Igor Chapurin Couture collection. It would be perfect for Kate. And what about this Lanvin pink silk bow-dress? Kate, I beg for you to wear playful, embellished clothes. Leave Roberto Cavalli and Peter Dundas’ Emilio Pucci for Megan Fox and Heidi Montag.”

All very good pics, but I’m not sure any actress would risk wearing such elaborate designs such as those from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 collection to the Oscars.

Beyonce Knowles In Alexander McQueen – Marquee Nightclub In The Cosmopolitan VIP Opening

Beyonce and Solange Knowles arrived on the red carpet for the grand opening of Marquee Nightclub at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas last week.

Solange sported a cropped or afro ‘do for most of 2010, but she starts 2011 long braids.

Beyonce sticks to the same old, same old blonde ‘do wearing an Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 dress.

Her Folklore floral organza print dress is an interesting mix of two looks from the runway.

I like how she paired her modified dress with a black leather belt.

I can well imagine that Bey wore black pumps, which I think may have worked perfectly well with this look.

Beyonce becomes the second person after Noomi Rapace to wear a look from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2011 collection.

Hopefully we’ll see more stars (Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Anna Paquin) wearing this collection in 2011.

Sidewalk Style: Vera Farmiga In Bottega Veneta

Vera Farmiga was spotted heading back to her hotel in New York City yesterday after a day of promoting her new movie, “Higher Ground.”

She wore a Bottega Veneta lace abstract dress and printed cardigan from the Fall 2011 collection with gold strappy sandals.

The yellow crepe dress has an espresso sheer lace-paneled overlay and a frayed neckline. Her cardigan also has the same abstract print.

Vera opted out of wearing the orange obi belt replacing it with a much simpler black ribbon tied to the waist.

I loved the extra kick the orange belt gave to this look.

I don’t dislike the look, but I believe it could’ve been so much better as the shoes seem overly fussy.

Make Hers A Double

Uniform dressing has been the buzzword on the European runways, but that doesn’t mean savvy designers haven’t found ways to tweak the suiting standards. We’re loving Paris’ creative plays on the double-breasted jacket. Stella McCartney sheared the sleeves off of hers to create a sleek camel coat-dress (left). Hussein Chalayan opened his show with several variants of the DB, each one low-slung and low-breaking for a sexier style—our favorite buttons just above the hem (center). And Phoebe Philo, a coat mistress if there is one working today, sent out a trompe l’oeil take at Celine: Hers closed along the far right side, with only a single top button to suggest a right-hand row (right).
