The Antiquorum Fall 2008 auction “Important Collectors Wristwatches, Pocket Watches & Clocks” took place yesterday, marked by feverish Internet bidding and a remarkable sale total of $9,892,812. After the dust had settled, a number of records had been set, most notable among these being from the sale of a gold Longines wristwatch once owned by celebrated physicist Albert Einstein. The tonneau-shaped Longines watch, dating from 1931 and engraved with Einstein’s name sold for $596,000, a figure which exceeded its pre-sale estimate by a staggering 2,000 percent. The sale represents a landmark for both Longines and watch auction history in general; it is both the highest price ever realized for a Longines watch, and the highest figure obtained for a simple time-only wristwatch. Regarding the Einstein Longines watch sale, Julian Schaerer, Antiquorum USA’s Watch Expert & Auctioneer said, “We’re delighted to see such an excellent outcome for our first auction of the season. In particular, we’re excited by the exceptional result achieved by the Longines wristwatch that belonged to the Time Magazine Man of the Century-the world’s most noteworthy physicist, Nobel Prize winning scientist, Albert Einstein.” However, the historic Longines watch was far from the only attention-getting sale of the auction. The highly anticipated Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 Chronograph Perpetual Calendar from 1956 soared to $1,514,400, setting the highest sale price of the auction. From Rolex, an Oyster Perpetual Datejust with a diamond dial and a platinum Oyster Perpetual Day-Date sold for record-setting amounts of $72,000, and $78,000, respectively. Highly complex watches from Vacheron Constantin and Gerald Genta also performed extremely well. “The results from today’s auction are confirmation that despite the current erratic economic climate, important timepieces continue to be extremely sought after, highly collectible, and sound tangible investments that have consistently proven to appreciate exponentially over time,” stated Robert Maron, the newly appointed chairman of Antiquorum. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Survivor is an exciting new addition to what many connoisseurs consider the world’s most famous high luxury sports watch collection. Carrying on the highly technical design theme of such coveted Royal Oak Offshore variants as the T3 and the Rubens Barrichello, the Survivor displays a number of unique features. Manufactured from blackened titanium, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Survivor’s “strongbox” case measures 42mm and features socket-head screws on the grooved octagonal bezel–a component which is jointly crafted from titanium and ceramic. Graduated perforations on the left side of the case are intended to minimize weight. Perhaps the most visually arresting aspects of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Survivor are the hinged chronograph pushpiece guards and out-sized winding crown with its notched rim and massive, faceted protective shoulders. These black titanium elements are visually complimented by an intricate “Mega Tapisserie” dial with a concentrically circled periphery, bi-colored small seconds subdial, and distinctively skeletonized hands. The rehaut bears a tachymeter scale, a feature which facilitates the calculation of elapsed time averages. A flat crystal in sapphire offers optimal protection against scratches. Ticking within the futuristic form of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Survivor is the manufacture AP 3126/3840 caliber. Comprised of 365 carefully finished parts, the 3126/3840 offers a number of desirable technical points. Among these features are a variable-inertia balance with eight “masselotte” weights, a stop-seconds mechanism, fast date correction, and a highly stable balance cock. The massive 22-karat gold rotor winds the mainspring in both of its directions of rotation, and powers the watch to a 60-hour power reserve. An anti-magnetic strongbox cage protects the caliber’s precision against the deleterious effects of magnetic fields. Audemars Piguet will produce 1,000 examples of the Royal Oak Offshore Survivor. Each Offshore Survivor is fitted with a checkered rubber strap, and a specially textured non-slip titanium medallion caseback engraved with “Royal Oak Offshore Survivor–Limited Edition”. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters. PRESS RELEASE: Titanium bezel with caoutchouc coating. New combination: Dashboard P´6612 PGC by Porsche Design Grenchen/Bietigheim-Bissingen. The watch manufacturer Eterna will be presenting a new model in its redesigned Dashboard line at the international watch and jewelry exhibition ” Baselworld” (April 3 – 10, 2008). The new P´6612 PGC is the first Porsche Design watch to combine a rose gold case and caoutchouc-coated titanium bezel. Classical, elegant rose gold contrasts with the dynamic, modern watch design. The new P`6612 PGC will be available in Porsche Design Stores and specialist retailers from the autumn of 2008. Play on colour The new black dial features the typical honeycomb pattern embossed in and a clear layout with white and red accents lending the watch a sporting, dynamic look. The tachymeter scale for speed measurement bears the unique classical Porsche Design typography. The rose gold numerals and indices affixed to the dial are partly coated in white Superluminova, as are the hands, which are pointed for the first time to allow even more precise time reading. The stopwatch hand, minute scale, red Dashboard logotype on the dial, and the chronograph function in contrasting red emphasise this watch’s dynamic look. The three totalisators are framed in rose gold, contributing to the dial’s clear layout. The second dial variation – also in black – sports a significantly more purist and even more masculine appearance with rose gold indices and hands partly designed with black Superluminova. The dial still carries the Porsche Design and “Dashboard” logotype in rose gold, emphasizing the harmonious overall appearance of the timepiece. The red stopwatch hand can be clearly seen on the dark background, ensuring excellent readability. Caoutchouc coating The dial is encircled by a black caoutchouc-coated titanium bezel, emphasising the contrast to the classical elegance of the rose gold case. The caoutchouc coating is fixed to the titanium surface in a special process; pressure, heat and an adhesive substance vulcanise the caoutchouc, chemically binding it to the bezel, giving the most exposed part of the case maximum protection from wear. The rose gold case is polished smooth, while the crown and buttons are sandblasted to a matt finish. The redesigned black natural caoutchouc strap matches the coating on the bezel. The strap’s clasp in rose gold rounds off the new P´6612 PGC’s harmonious design. Like all Dashboard models, the P´6612 PGC is equipped with a special Porsche Design rotor inspired by the design of a Porsche sporting wheel-rim. The rotor system and the automatic ETA 2894-2 movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal back enclosed in rose gold.
