German watch manufacturer A. Lange & Söhne marks the occasion of hiring its 500th employee, with the addition of young watchmaker Nadine Görgl, 19. Miss Görgl, who will lend her skills to the final adjustment section, joins a team of eleven gifted new watchmakers, seven of whom received their watchmaking education from Lange’s proprietary watchmaking school. A. Lange & Söhne has experienced a truly notable degree of success since the brand was revived in 1990, following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. Walter Lange, great-grandson of founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange envisioned that the brand would eventually be able to employ somewhere around 100 watchmakers, but customer appetite for exceptional A. Lange & Söhne timepieces has been a happy circumstance that has necessitated a far larger staff. A. Lange & Söhne CEO Fabian Krone stated, “Because of the growing global demand for the timepieces created by A. Lange & Söhne, we expect the need for highly qualified staff to remain over the coming years. And since the number of complicated watch movements is continuing to increase, there will still only be a few thousand watches leaving the manufactory each year in the future despite the growing size of the workforce.” Currently, Lange is planning to expand its production facilities, a project which will begin this year. The Glashütte watch industry, comprising a handful of brands, employs somewhat over 1,000 individuals. Of this number, approximately half are employees of the A. Lange & Söhne firm. The company is particularly proud of its contributions to the cultivation of new watchmakers, noting that more than fifty watchmaking students have graduated from the Lange Watchmaking School, with another twenty-five currently undertaking their professional training. The Panerai Luminor 1950 collection is the major retro-themed part of the company’s product line. Here, the look is enhanced with a thoroughly modern movement being expressed on a simple and well laid-out dial. This is the Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days Rattrapante Watch ref. PAM00319. Inside the watch is one of Panerai’s exclusive in-house made movements, the Caliber P.2006/3 which is manually-wound with an 8 day power reserve (via three barrels). The 356 part movement also features a linear power reserve indicator, a column wheel based split second 30 minute chronograph (rattrapante), and the time with a subsidiary seconds dial. Like all Panerai watches, the dial is characterized by simple green lume (for the 1950 line) against a matte black dial. The lume is characteristically set on its own layer with the stenciled black dials placed on it. Pushers for the chronograph are on the left side of the 18k pink gold case that is 47mm wide done with a brushed finish and water resistant to 100 meters. Having a split second chronograph, the watch has two chronograph seconds hands which are placed in the “chop sticks” position pointing down for symmetry on the main dial. Through the rear of the watch’s sapphire caseback window you can view the P.2006/3 movement that is very well laid out – made for visual admiration. There you can see the chronograph column wheel, the balance spring, and part of the winding mechanism. In all, the Luminor 1950 8 Days Rattrapante is a nicely done watch with a quality movement done by Panerai and will come in a limited edition of just 300 pieces. The IWC Vintage Collection and other SIHH 2008 timepieces were shown in Singapore recently, before an appreciate audience of collectors, watch fans, and selected journalists. A festive 19th century theme which captured the age of IWC founder Florentine Ariosto Jones characterized the refined evening; ladies strolled about in period-style dresses with parasols and men were decked out in appropriate suits, top hats, and canes. There was also an elegant, yet relaxed dinner and live musical performances.
Naturally, the presentation of the IWC’s 2008 novelties was the highlight of the evening. In addition to a range of displays which showcased the new timepieces to their best advantage, guests were able to examine closely and try on the new watches, in the presence of enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable IWC staff. Di Modolo launched their re-vamped website earlier this year complete with a new color scheme, a new ambassador, a new logo and an overall new feel. The Italian luxury jeweler has chosen a deep burgundy and black color scheme with a sunray design emanating from the circle “Di Modolo-Milano” logo. Set to debut at Baselworld 2009, the Glashutte Original Meissen Tourbillon watch unifies the crafts of fine porcelain work and exceptional haute horlogerie. In 2007, Glashutte Original unveiled its supremely elegant Senator Meissen watch, which offered the artisanal delight of a dial in hand-painted white Meissen porcelain. Now, this incomparably fine presentation will give an ultimate showcase for the intricate flying tourbillon invented by the legendary German watchmaker Alfred Helwig in 1920. The Glashutte Original Meissen Tourbillon watch features a 40mm case manufactured from 18-karat rose gold. Beneath the curved sapphire crystal lies a wafer-thin dial in white Meissen porcelain, created by the painstaking firing of the liquid ceramic material at 1400°C, followed by the application of successive porcelain glazes at a somewhat lower temperature. As remarkable as the luster and brilliance of the porcelain dial itself are the hand-painted Roman numerals, trademark crossed blue Meissen swords, and the Glashutte Original insignia. Applied with the finest brushes, these elements require more than eight hours of dedicated attention by master script painters and maintain the hallowed centuries-old traditions of the Meissen manufactory. Visible through the exhibition sapphire caseback of the Glashutte Original Meissen Tourbillon watch is the richly decorated Caliber 94-11. Manufactured by the house, this self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve displays traditional elements of Saxon refinement, including bridges with beveled edges and a ribbed finish. The rotor is equipped with a 21-karat gold peripheral mass to ensure optimum winding efficiency. Of course, the star element of the Glashutte Original Caliber 94-11 is the distinctive flying tourbillon, whose refined cage and constructive elements proudly bear the banner of traditional German high watchmaking. Key elements of this tourbillon escapement include a balance wheel with weighted gold screws and a Breguet hairspring pulsating at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. In the manner of classical Glashutte pocket watches of the highest quality, the tourbillon is mounted on diamond end stones. The passage of seconds is marked by a blue-tipped pointer affixed to the rotating cage. The Glashutte Original Meissen Tourbillon watch is fitted with an Louisiana Alligator leather strap and an 18-karat rose gold buckle decorated with the double-G insignia of the Manufacture. Water resistance is rated for 30 meters. The theme of travel will be the focus of a special weekend exhibition held May 16th and 17th at the renowned Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The event coincides with International Museum day, an occasion jointly conducted by the Association of Swiss Museums and the International Council of Museums.
Visitors to the Patek Philippe Museum will enjoy a number of activities certain to broaden their appreciation of the prestigious Geneva watch manufacturer, its historical background, and the role the firm has played in developing timepieces deemed truly useful for travelers. Every two hours, beginning at 11:15AM and concluding at 7:15PM, a seminar will be presented that covers the two most significant commercial trips undertaken by Patek Philippe co-founder Antoine Norbert de Patek. Among other points, these journeys were instrumental in establishing Patek Philippe’s presence in North America, as well as leading to the formation of a historic relationship with the retailer Tiffany & Company.
A true delight for connoisseurs of fine watchmaking is a special presentation of 36 rare travel timepieces. These rarities include an 18th century yellow gold Louis XV-styled pocket watch with an enameled caseback engraved with 53 global locales, a Patek Philippe Ref. 2597 “jumping hour” wristwatch indicating two time zones dating from 1961, and several examples of important historical Patek Philippe World Time timepieces, including a key-wound 8-day table clock with a quarter-hour repeater, and a pocket watch from 1949 with an exquisite dial depicting the continents and oceans in polychrome cloisonne enamel.
Additional activities include a professionally-guided “Travel around the world” exhibit on the third floor of the museum every half hour from 10:30AM onward, and functional demonstrations of World Time and time zone watches. The latter will take place all throughout both days of the exhibition, on the ground floor of the Patek Philippe Museum.
The Patek Philippe Museum “Travel” exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00AM until 9:00PM on Saturday, May 16th, and from 10:00AM to 6:00PM on Sunday, May 17th. Admittance is free of charge.

The Panerai Special Editions 2010 Luminor Marina Left Handed watch showcases a special black-coated Luminor Marina case whose winding crown is oriented on the left side. The 3.2mm thick, curved sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating, and the dial features a small seconds subdial and large stick and Arabic luminous hour figures. The strap is in leather, and fitted with a blackened stainless steel buckle personalized with the Panerai signature. The crown is sealed via the patented Panerai locking device; this feature in combination with the thick screw-locked steel caseback enables the watch to achieve a 300 meter water resistance level.
Movement is the manually wound 17-jewel Panerai OP II caliber. This caliber is equipped with an Incabloc shock absorber, and a Glucydur balance that alternates 21,600 times per hour. Power reserve is 56 hours.
